USS Ward DD-139 was famous for her very short construction time, under 18 days at Mare Island Naval Shipyard. But she entered history by opening fire in the morning of 7 December 1941 on a Japanese midget submarine trying to enter Pearl Harbor naval base, and successfully sinking it.
